Today we are going to take a look at what life is like in Iraq. Your group is responsible for creating a 10 minute presentation on a certain aspect of life in Iraq. Everyone in your group must participate in some way, and you are accountable for your contributions.

Here are the aspects of life that you may choose from:

Religion
Sports
Education
The arts

Whichever group wins gets first choice.

The presentation should include a photo essay or Powerpoint, or a demonstration of the events, clips from art shows, etc.

These are due on Monday. I will explain more in class.

Instructions for President Research Paper

Instructions for President Research Paper

First, pick a president. Each class will draw for numbers, and the lowest number gets to pick first.

Once you have selected a President, begin reading about his term in office. You must select his most important, defining moment/action as President.

This assignment is two-fold:

1. Write a three page research paper over your President’s Most Defining Moment. This paper must be:
a. Typed
b. Double Spaced
c. 12 point print
d. Must have 3 sources
i. One Encylopedia (online or print)
ii. One book source
iii. One Internet
e. Must have bibliography (MLA)
f. Must have at least 3 note cards.
g. Must have an outline
h. Must have Cover-page.
i. Must have rough draft.

All of this follows MLA format.

Dr. Snyder will be grading everything but the final paper itself. I will be grading the final paper AND the PowerPoint.

Your paper should discuss the historical causes for your President’s Defining Moment, what caused him to make the decisions he did, and the impact of that decision.

The PowerPoint must be minimum of 10 slides and should tell the story of your President’s Most Defining Moment. You will present your PowerPoint to the class in a short presentation about your moment.

This assignment is due on Jan 31 for red day, February 1 for Gold Day. Not everyone will be able to present that day obviously, but you will have to show me that you have it ready to present anyway. Whoever picked their president first will have to present first. I will keep a record of the order.

Late papers/presentations are automatically graded at 59% of their normal score.

Welcome Back!

I hope you all come back to school rested, reinvigorated, relaxed, and several other "R" words that escape my mind. We're going to jump quite a bit forward in the book, all the way to Chapter 18, which is a study of the Federal Court System. Appropriately enough, this chapter is called, "The Federal Court System." Who knew!

The reason we're skipping ahead is because we are going to start a series of in-depth discussions of the Bill of Rights and the struggles that we've overcome to gain and keep these rights. In doing so, we will be studying several Supreme Court Cases of major importance. Since the Supreme Court is the highest Federal Court in all the land, what a better place to start is there than Chapter 18?

Once we finish Chapter 18 and test over it, we will be skipping all around the book as we touch on several controversial issues (capital punishment, gun control, and...dare I say it....Abortion.) Use of the internet will become VITAL if you are to pass this course.

The new grade breakdown is as follows:

Portfolio: 5%
President Powerpoint and Paper: 5%
Quizzes: 15%
Internet/Blog topics: 10%
Tests: 10%
Participation: 10%
Homework: 10%
Senior Project: 25%
Final: 10%

Here is the schedule for the first week, plus big dates in the future:

Tuesday 1/3 and Wednesday 1/4: Begin Chapter 18 Section 1. Assignment: Learn the Supreme Court Justices. Here is a link to where you can find them. Please note that William Rehnquist recently passed away, and John Roberts took his place as Chief Justice.

Justices

Thursday 1/4 and Friday 1/5: Chapter 18 Section 1 Quiz. Notes over Chapter 18 Section 2. Current Events.

The due date for learning the Supreme Court Justices is Wednesday January 11 for Red Day and Thursday January 12 for Gold Day.
